What is the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)? The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early 1800s in the United States. Seeking to move beyond denominational disagreements, the founders envisioned a united church of Jesus Christ modeled on the New Testament. Today nearly 4,000 congregations still share these characteristics:
Find out more about the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by checking out our denominational website, www.disciples.org, and our regional website for the Christian Church in Georgia, www.gadisciples.org. What Do Disciples Believe? Disciples affirm that Jesus Christ is the son of the living God, and offers saving grace to all; and that all persons are God's children. Church members are free to follow their consciences as guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and prayer. We are called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We practice open communion in weekly worship. The Lord's Supper is open to all who believe in Jesus Christ. We baptize by immersion those who are ready to begin a new life in Christ. We honor other baptismal traditions of those who join our church. The ministry of all believers is important to us. Both ministers and laypersons serve in the work, worship, and leadership of the church. {mosimage} The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder of the Scottish Presbyterian roots of our founders. What about Lawrenceville First? LFCC was founded in 1909 by a group of Gwinnett County natives who met each Sunday for communion and Bible study -- two essentials of church life for Disciples of Christ. They worshiped with other churches in town until they could call their own preacher and convene a proper worship service, and they eventually built a rock churchhouse on Perry Street near the Lawrenceville Square. The congregation moved to its current location on Sugarloaf Parkway in 1997, and has seen its own membership change as Lawrenceville and the surrounding communities have changed. Today we are a vibrant collection of young members and the young-at-heart, extended families and single adults, from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. We are heeding God's call into new ministries that lift our eyes to the needs of our community. We are joyfully nurturing our growing children's group. We are deepening our commitments to the spiritual disciplines of Bible study, prayer, and Christian friendship. Praise be to God, who never leaves us in one place for too long! |
